KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau

Today we toured KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau, one of the major concentration camps from World War II. I was expecting to see the remains of a building and a small monument, and was amazed to find that this place is huge. The perimeter of the camp is still walled, there are still several buildings available for viewing, and there is an excellent museum–all available to the public for free.

The atrocity of the Holocaust hit me in a new way, as the reality of this part of our so-recent history began to sink in. It’s hard to even think about, because my mind doesn’t want to go there.

The museum did a good job of conveying the reasons and events that led to World War II. I definitely left with a better understanding of how Germans viewed the war then, and how they view it today. Overall it was a depressing experience, and it will take a while to shake the feeling, but I’m certainly glad to have done it.

To help lighten the mood, we made another trip to the Krabba-Nescht, where once again good food and good fun was had by all.

I was just thinking the one thing that bothered me the most about the camp is how life just seemed to go on around it. It’s amazing to me how something like that can on and people just walk by.
